Abstract

Garcez et al. infected cerebral organoids with the Brazilian Zika virus strain, demonstrating a 40% reduction in organoid size due to neural progenitor cell death and depletion. Published during the 2016 Zika epidemic, this Science study provided critical mechanistic evidence linking ZIKV infection to congenital microcephaly through preferential neural progenitor destruction.
