Microglia-Containing Brain Organoids

Abstract
Ormel et al. demonstrated that omitting dual SMAD inhibition from the cerebral organoid protocol permits endogenous development of IBA1+/TMEM119+ microglia within the neural tissue. These innate immune cells are phagocytically active and respond to LPS with cytokine release, enabling neuroinflammation modeling without the need for exogenous microglia co-culture.
