Abstract

Zimmermann et al. established the ring-shaped engineered heart tissue (EHT) format using cardiomyocytes in collagen/Matrigel hydrogels under auxotonic mechanical loading. The EHTs develop aligned sarcomeres, generate measurable isometric force, and display Frank-Starling behavior, establishing the foundational technology for cardiac tissue engineering and drug testing.
